Important Information
Passport photos
Australian passport photo specifications are very strict. Photos that do not meet these standards will be rejected and may significantly delay your application. As such, it is essential you read and adhere to our Passport Photo Guidelines.
Processing times
It typically takes eight weeks to receive a passport for applications lodged by mail after it has been successfully lodged, as long as all supporting documents and photos are accepted. Significant delays may occur if your photos are not accepted or if any required documents are missing. Please note that applications submitted outside of Australia cannot be expedited. If you need a passport urgently, you may be eligible for an emergency passport.
Adult renewal applications can be lodged by mail if the applicant is 18 or older and has an Australian passport which meets all the below criteria:
- issued when you were 16 or older
- issued on or after 1 January 2006
- valid for at least 2 years at time of issue
- has your current name, date of birth, place of birth, and gender
- has not been lost/stolen/damaged/cancelled
Child renewal applications can be lodged by mail if the child meets all the below criteria:
- aged 15 or younger
- previously held an Australian passport
- previous passport has not been lost/stolen/damaged/cancelled
If you do not meet all the criteria for either of the above options, you have to lodge your passport in person - by appointment only - at the Embassy. You can also opt to lodge your application in person even if you are eligible to do so by mail. For information on how to lodge your renewal or any other passport application in person, visit Lodge a Passport Application in Person.
