Driving Licence Information

Ireland has a driving license agreement with Australia for all categories of licenses. This means that if you hold an Australian driving license and reside in Ireland, you can surrender your Australian license in exchange for an equivalent Irish license without having to take a driving test. All surrendered licenses are sent back to the relevant Australian motor vehicle registry.

Driver licensing in Australia is managed by the authorities of each state and territory. Therefore, you should direct any inquiries to the road traffic authority of the state or territory that issued your license. The Embassy does not extend, renew, or replace any state or territory license. See contact details for the relevant driver licensing authorities

If your application requires your signature to be witnessed and/or your photograph to be certified, you may choose to have this done at the Embassy by a Diplomatic or Consular Officer. In addition to the notarial fee you have to pay the Embassy , you will also have to pay a fee for your license directly to the relevant state/territory authority in Australia.

Visits to the Embassy are by appointment only. Please remember to bring your passport and license when visiting the Embassy. It is your responsibility to forward the completed application to Australia.
